What is Immunity?

What is Immunity?

The immune system is a remarkable and intricate network that plays a vital role in safeguarding our pets' bodies from harm caused by pathogens* and other stresses. It comprises a range of complex parts that work diligently together to protect all living beings.

To help us better understand this complex system, modern science divides the immune system into two main categories: adaptive and innate immunity.

Many of us are somewhat familiar with the adaptive immune system. This part of the immune response learns to recognize specific triggers of immune response, or antigens**, through exposure, such as through vaccinations. When the body encounters an antigen, it produces antibodies that specifically target and neutralize that threat. It’s essential to understand that the adaptive system requires training—this is why vaccinations are often given in repeats and boosters. This system is designed to combat particular antigens it has been exposed to before. While it might seem logical to think that one would need as many vaccines as there are diseases, the reality is more nuanced.

But what happens when someone hasn’t been vaccinated or lacks the training to recognize and resist a pathogen? What if there’s no existing vaccine to help? Or what if we encounter an illness that is still unknown to science?

It’s reassuring to know that every individual is born with an innate immune system, a powerful first line of defense against various challenges and invaders. Innate immunity serves as a protective shield, supporting us through adversities as we transition into the world beyond the safety of the womb or an eggshell. This innate protection is the body's way of caring for us from the very beginning, reminding us that we are not alone in facing threats. This protection is non-specific and can vary from pet to pet. Additionally, it may weaken due to environmental factors, stress, and aging.

VetIMMUNE® PI is a unique product that strengthens innate immune responses vital for the protection of the organism. It helps to balance the natural immune response, e.g., helps protect itself, which translates to a healthier and longer life.

* A Pathogen is a microorganism that may cause a disease.
** Antigens are substances that induce a specific immune response in the body.
